Jerry Dean Lawson

Mr. Jerry Dean Lawson, age 53, husband of Janie Lawson of Fortune Drive, Spartanburg passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Lawson was born in Union, SC July 10, 1958, a son of Rev. Jerry D. and Patsy Lawson of Jonesville and Helen Lawson Lawson of Simpsonville.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, February 3, 2012 at J.M. Dunbar Funeral Chapel, 690 South Port Road, Roebuck, SC.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Friday in the chapel prior to the service.

The family is at their respective homes.

William C. Simmons
Union, S.C.

William C. Simmons of Union, SC passed away on his 85th birthday, January 31st.

Born in Pickens County, son of the late Furman O. and Clara Trotter Simmons. He is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Hellen Simmons, and four daughters, Donna Freeman of Pisgah Forest, NC, Claire Rehkopf of Mt. Ulla, NC, Mary Kasunick, of Marietta, SC and Beth McAbee of Mt. Pleasant, SC and two granddaughters, Taylor and Lucy Busbin also of Mt. Pleasant. William is also survived by four siblings, Margaret Holder, Carol Plumblee, Jean Cox and Hal Simmons all of Greenville County. He was predeceased by three other siblings of Greenville.

W. C. retired in 1990 from Milliken after a 32 year career. He was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School for many years. W. C. was also a US Navy Veteran of WWII and served his country with great pride.

W.C. was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed gardening as well. William was a beloved husband and father and leaves a legacy of great faith in God and love for his family to all who knew him.

A celebration of life service will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00PM at the church.

Memorials may be made to Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, 1433 Lockhart Hwy., Union, SC 29379.

George Frank Bright
Pacolet, SC

Mr. George Frank Bright, age 65, husband of Gay Maria McGraw Bright of 280 McDowel Street, Pacolet, SC, went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 30, 2012 at Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Bright was born in Spartanburg, SC September 4, 1946, a son of Lola Hill Bright of Spartanburg and the late Leroy Bright. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and was a former truck driver. Mr. Bright was a member of Hammett’s Grove Baptist Church of Spartanburg where he was a teacher and lay preacher.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Sharon Quinn; a son, Roy Bright; two step-sons: Mark Ellison and Scott Ellison; a step-daughter, Star Allison; four sisters: Nancy Parris, Susie Wilson, Barbara Sanders and Myra Smith; a brother, Johnny Bright and sixteen grandchildren all of Pacolet. Mr. Bright was predeceased by a sister, Doris Stafford.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Hammett’s Grove Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Paul Hogan, Rev. Andrew Carrigan, Rev. Clifford Phillips and Rev. Michael Rochester.

Visitation will be 1:30-2:30 PM Wednesday in the church prior to the service.

Margaret Hope McMurtrey
Union, SC

Mrs. Margaret Hope Austin McMurtrey of 624 Brown’s Creek Church Road, Union, widow of William R. McMurtrey, went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 27, 2012.

Mrs. McMurtrey was born in Union, SC May 18, 1939, a daughter of the late John Gary and Lottie Mae Austin. She was a graduate of Union High School, a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and was a retired textile worker. Mrs. McMurtrey was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three children: a son, Ronnie Ivey and wife Angie of Union; two daughters: Donna S. Ivey of the home and Margaret I. West of Union; five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Connie Conway Williams
Union, S.C.

Connie Conway Williams, age 88, of Union, South Carolina, formally of Dallas, PA died Monday, January 23, 2012 at the home of her son, Carson Sprow, following a brief illness.

Born January 3, 1924 in Bibb County, Alabama, Connie was the last of twelve children born to the late Mary Florence Barnette and John Henry Conway. She moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA and later lived in Dallas, PA having worked with Native Textiles for 35 years retiring in 1988. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 21 years, Carlton Ward Sprow in 1963, her daughter, Carlene Viola Sprow in 1975 , her second husband, Richard Howard "Dick' Williams in 2008, a grandson, Wade Phillip Sprow in 2009, as well as six brothers and five sisters.

Surviving are her sons, Carson Wade Sprow and his wife, Gale of Union, SC, and Carlton Ward Sprow, Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Berwick, PA; a step-daughter, Cynthia Williams Grove and her husband, Larry of Anchorage, Alaska, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 27 at 3 o'clock at the Kielty-Moran Funeral Home, 87 Washington St., in Plymouth, PA with the Reverend David Wildones offficiating. Interment will follow in the Dennison Cemetery in Forty Fort, PA. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

Jamie R. Gilliland
Pacolet, S.C.

Mrs. Jamie Renee Rector Gilliland, age 47, wife of Randy Gilliland of 6830 Union Hwy., Pacolet, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Upstate Carolina Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mrs. Gilliland was born in Union, June 22, 1964, a daughter of the late Charles L. and Ila Mae Vaughn Rector. She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was employed with Wal-Mart in Gaffney. Mrs. Gilliland was a member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband is one sister: Jo Anne Kelley of Union and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gilliland was predeceased by a sister, Brenda Jean Franklin.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, January 27, 2012 at Rehobath Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Randy Smith.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:30 PM Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home-Union.

Betty E. Pecko
Union, S.C.

Betty Elmeta Pecko, 77, formerly of Sumter SC passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, January 23, 2012 due to complications resulting from a stroke. Born August 31, 1934 in Bearden, AR, she was the daughter of the late George Wesley and Bettie Dodds and the wife of Harry Carl Pecko. She was preceded in death by her sister, Pearl Prosser Farris of AR.

Betty was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Union, SC where she was involved with the Legion of Mary, the Catholic Ladies Guild, and the wife of Deacon Harry Pecko. She was a former member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Sumter where she was head of the Rosary Society, choir member, CYO Director and volunteered for numerous other activities in the church and community.

Betty was a devoted wife to her husband of 59 years and loving mother to her nine children, 18 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her nine children listed in order with their spouses, children, and great-grandchildren: Michael Pecko of Cape Canaveral FL, Mark Pecko of Cape Canaveral, FL (children Melissa and Antoine), Theresa P. Bryant of Sumter, SC (husband Roy and children Christy (great-grandchildren McKenzie, Hannah and Emma Grace (Clint and Chad), Joseph Pecko of Cocoa Beach, FL (wife Cris and children Joey, Misha and Matthew), Mary P. Reed of Ave Maria, FL (husband Tracy and children Jeremy and Joshua), Paul Pecko of Orlando FL, Anita P. Whitney of Union, SC (husband Jimbo and children Eva, Bo, Ann and Julia), John Pecko of Woodbine, GA (wife Patti and children Steven, Keith, and Kyle), and Patricia P. Crawford of Huger, SC (husband Allen and son Tommy ). Betty is also survived by two nieces and two nephews currently residing in Little Rock, AR.

On Friday, January 27, 2012 at 4:00 p.m., the family invites all to gather at St. Augustine Catholic Church and will pray the Rosary. Following prayers in the church, the family will visit with friends in Seton Hall until 6:00 p.m.. All are welcome to Betty’s funeral mass which will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends in the Parish hall following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, please honor the bereaved and the deceased by making a gift to St. Jude’s International Ministries Inc., a non-profit organization founded by the Pecko family that seeks to serve those who are the poorest among us. Mr. Tony W. Everhart, Jr., age 59, husband of Deborah C. Nelson Everhart of 115 Liberty Ridge Rd., Pacolet, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Everhart was born in Gaffney, September 9,, 1952 a son of Doris Bryant Everhart of Boiling Springs and the late Tony W. Everhart, Sr. He was employed with Investa where he also served as a lieutenant with the fire brigade. Mr. Everhart was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters: Mandy Mathis of Cowpens, Angel Page of Boiling Springs, and Hannah Warren of Gaston; three sons: William Cook of the home, Tony Everhart of Gaffney and Scott Everhart of Gaffney; a sister: Roxanne Hawkins of Wellford: two brothers: Tim Everhart and Ricky Everhart both of Spartanburg; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith.

Mr. Everhart’s co-worker and friends will serve as active pallbearers.

Member of the fire brigade will serve as the honorary escort.

The body will be carried to the home, 115 Liberty Ridge Rd., Pacolet, where the family will receive friends tonight from from 6:00 until 9:00 PM.

Juanita Ruth Y. Knox
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Juanita Ruth Yarborough Knox, age 80, of 1536 Pineland Rd., Union, passed away, Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Knox was born in Union, December 8, 1931, a daughter of the late John A. Yarborough and Ella Mae Wiggins Y. Byrum. She was retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant and was a member of the Greater Union Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Jane Lawson and friend Larry Baldwin, and Beth Martin and husband Lewis all of Union; one son: Walter Knox and wife Jean of Union; a brother: John Yarborough and wife Flo of Cookeville, TN; three grandchildren: Andrea Thompson, Elizabeth Birch and husband Kevin and Jameson Knox; two great-grandchildren: Aubrey Thompson and Alyssa Thompson; a special friend: Gean Woody of Spartanburg. Mrs. Knox was predeceased by two brothers, Fred and Richard Yarborough.

A celebration of life service will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Greater Union Church conducted by Dr. John Cody and Rev. Roger Estes.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Monday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Ken Palmer, Albert Roark, Jeff Mason, Billy Green, David Shetley, and Thomas Gibson.

Martha Elizabeth Lawson
Buffalo, S.C.

Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Lawson, age 84, widow of Rufus O. Lawson, Jr., of 142 Putman Rd., Buffalo, passed away, Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Lawson was born in Buffalo, July 6, 1927, a daughter of the late Robert Dewey Lawson and Flora Wright Lawson. She was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and was a member of Bogansville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lawson was a member of the Frieda Fuller Sunday School Class and had worked in the nursery of the church for over 50 years.

Surviving are a daughter: Belinda L. Sturgill and husband Terry of Pacolet; a grandson: Erich C. Sturgill and wife Julie of Cowpens; two great-grandsons: Bennett and Andrew Sturgill; and several loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at Bogansville United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Peterson and Rev. Angelia Price. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Lawson, Billy Lawson, Jeff Lawson, Samuel Lawson, Nicholas Lawson, Clay Lawson and Eddie Rector.

Members of the Frieda Fuller Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group.

Virginia Marguerite Rountree
Union, SC

Miss Virginia Marguerite Rountree, age 82 of Ellen Sagar Nursing home, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Miss Rountree was born in Buffalo, SC August 13, 1929, a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Rountree and Rosa Riley Rountree. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company. She was a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and was the last surviving member of twelve children.

Surviving are three nieces: Patty Russell, Kris Bridger and Rosemary Behrens and three nephews: Steve Rountree, John Rountree and Jim Rountree.

A graveside memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Kevin Dalton.

Ferrell Gregory Ivey Palmer
Union, S.C.

Mrs. Ferrell Palmer, age 96, went to be with the Lord on January, 20, 2012, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was the youngest of eleven children born to Barton “Bee” and Nola Ivey Gregory on November 16, 1915 and was the last surviving member of her family. She was first married to the late Arthur Hope Ivey and then the late Washington N. Palmer.

As the matriarch of her family, she answered to many names, Mother, Mama Ferrell, Grandma and Mama. She was “Miss Lady Bug” to her special friend and constant companion, Dianne Stephenson. She was known for her fine southern cooking, especially her chocolate meringue pie, fresh coconut cake and biscuits. She was one of the oldest members of Philippi Baptist Church where she was very active until her health declined. She taught the Beginners class for many years, was active in the Joy Club, WMU and loved her Sunday School class.

Mrs. Palmer is survived by her “four little girls”, Judy Ivey Medford and the late Wayne D. Medford, Sue Ivey Cudd and husband Julian, Vicki Ivey Nalls and husband Richard, Joan Ivey Penland and husband Randy.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Tonya Medford Proctor and husband Kenneth, Sheila Medford Lawson and Danny Fender, Sally Medford Edens, Gregory Medford and wife Rene, Todd Cudd and Leigh Christenberry, Charles (Chip) Wade, Eric Wade, Khristy Wade, and Kyle Penland and wife Katie.

She is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren, David Proctor, Robert Ashmore and Crystal Bowen, Suzanne Ashmore Smith and husband Chris, Vance and Luke Edens, Connor and Ivey Medford, Jill, Justin and Jaryn Cudd, Taylor and Jessica Wade, Maclyn Boals and Eliza Penland; three great-great-grandchildren, Kolton Ashmore, Nathan and Isabelle Smith. Mrs. Palmer was predeceased by two great-grandchilden: Brett Wade and Jared Cudd.

Her family and friends are blessed to celebrate her life at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Philippi Baptist Church with services conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Palmers grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held prior to the services at the church beginning at 1:30 until 3:00 PM.
Memorial may be made to Philippi Baptist Church Building Fund, 327 Philippi Church Rd., Union, SC 29379.

Gene Y. Tollison
Union, S.C.

Mr. Gene Y. Tollison, age 74, husband of Sarah Beheler Tollison of 1973 Jonesville Hwy., passed away, Wednesday evening, January 18, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Tollison was born in Union, July 14, 1937 a son of the late Norman Guy Tollison and Olive Belue Tollison. He was a 1956 graduate of Union High School and was retired after 32 years with the Union County School Bus Maintenance Shop. Mr. Tollison was a Life Member, Past Master, and Secretary for 25 years of the Union Masonic Lodge #75. He was a Life Member of the Union York Rite Bodies, a Life Member of the KYCH, and a member of the Holy Royal Arch Priest. Mr. Tollison was also a founding member of the Bonham Fire Dept., a former Dixie Youth Baseball coach and a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Jonesville Unit. He was a member of Fairforest Baptist Church and attended Union Church of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Dean Tollison and wife Laura, and Wayne Tollison and wife Martha all of Union; one brother: Lynn C. Tollison and wife Betty of Fort Mill; four grandchildren: Cale Tollison and wife Melody, Brett Tollison, Casie Jolly and husband Brad, and Jackie Tollison; four great-grandchildren: Abby Tollison, Leah Tollison, Eva Jolly, and Sophie Jolly. Mr. Tollison was predeceased by an infant brother, Francis Dean Tollison.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Union Church of God conducted by Rev. Tommy Brown and Rev. Allen Gregory. Burial will be in Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Brett Tollison, Cale Tollison, Brad Jolly, Barry Tollison, Ronnie Tollison, and Gary Fast.

The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 to form the honorary escort; present and former employees of the Union School Bus Maintenance Shop, Colon Duckett, Marion McAbee, Harry Helms, Steve Trammell, Bob DeHart, Roger Gregory, Odean Fowler, Sammy Smith, and Donnie Vinson.

Visitation will be held at Fairforest Baptist Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the burial.

Mary Ann Adams

Miss Mary Ann Adams, age 65 of 2519 Jonesville Lockhart Hwy, Union, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 18, 2012.

Miss Adams was born in Columbia, SC October 19, 1946, a daughter of the late Robert Smith Adams, Sr. and Thelma Lawson Adams. She was a very faithful member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church where she was a member of the Judy Hayes Sunday School Class. Miss Adams was loved by everyone who knew her.

Surviving are three sisters: Pearl Farr and husband James of the home, Bobbie Ruth Snyder of Buffalo and Betty Inman of Union; a sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Adams of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Miss Adams was predeceased by two sisters, Marian A. Alexander and Annie Laura Adams and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Robert Smith Adams, Jr and wife Doris and Gene Adams.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 20, 2012 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West and Rev. Lynn Ford. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dr. Kenneth Alexander, Tommy Ford, Michael Ford, Rev. Lynn Ford, Larry Adams, Johnny Inman and Robert Adams. The adults of Mt Joy Baptist Church are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the committal service.

Maggie Inman Teague
Union, SC

Mrs. Maggie Inman B. Teague, age 86 of Oakmont of Union, widow of William Lynn Teague, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Regioal Hospice Home in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Teague was born in Union, SC June 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Joseph Smith Inman and Clara Holcombe Inman. Mrs. Teague spend many years caring for others, serving as a nurse’s aid setting with numerous elderly people of Union County. She was a member of Monarch Assembly of God Church. Mrs Teague was first married to the late E.C. Baker of Whitmire who died while serving his country.

Surviving are two daughters: Sophia Lynn Teague of Gibsonton, FL and Brenda Baker Shively and husband Garland of Ferrum, VA; a son, Eugene Baker and wife Elvira of Columbia, SC; five sisters: Alma I. Valentine of Union, Hattie I. Gregory, Josie O’Shields both of N. Augusta, SC, Jean Moore of Tampa, FL and Peggy Lee of Lexington, SC; five grandchildren: Rhonda Shively, Cherly Arrington, Diana Thomas, Debra Snow and Charlie Baker; eleven great-grandchildren and two God children. Mrs. Teague was predeceased by two sisters: Mattie Sue Vinson and Cora I. Riddle and five brothers: Dan, Laurie, Joe, Charlie and Rev. Bob Inman.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at the SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Bobby Inman, Jr., and Rev. Tommy Brown. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Thomas O’Shields, Martin Allen, Danny Inman, Kyle Arrington, Seth Sigmon and Larry Anthony.

Ann “Baba” Gregory Fralick
Lexington, SC

Mrs. E. Ann “Baba” Gregory Fralick of Lexington, SC passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Fralick was born in Pinckney Township, SC, September 5, 1930 to John L. Gregory, Sr and Mattie Palmer Gregory. She was a graduate of Union High School, Winthrop College and married Charles R. Fralick, Sr in 1951. Mrs. Fralick was a dedicated schoolteacher who took great pride in the accomplishments of her students.

Mrs. Fralick was predeceased by her husband, Charles, Sr., her brothers William Gregory and John L. Gregory, Jr., and her two grandsons, Charles Perry and William “BJ” Van Sickle. Mr. William Earl Sherbert, age 83, husband of Mary “Maxine” Moore Sherbert of 200 Cottage Ave., Union, passed away, Saturday, January 13, 2012 at his home.

Mr. Sherbert was born in Enoree, July 24, 1928, a son of the late John R. and Hannah Whitmore Sherbert. He was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant and from the Union Recycling Center. Mr. Sherbert was a member of Glory Baptist Church and was an avid guitar player.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Susan Hamby and Kathy Varner and husband Tim all of Union; four grandchildren: Katrina Ray, Billy Ponder, Terry Hamby, and Jamie Varner; six great-grandchildren: Trent Ray, Cassandra Ray, Kathy Means, Melle Ponder, Garrett Ponder and Alyssa Hamby; four great-great-grandchildren: Izayiah Brannon, Zavien Ray, Alaysia Ray, and Dontrea Austin. Mr. Sherbert was predeceased by a daughter, Audrey Sherbert.

Mr. John Walter Varner, age 76 husband of Brooks Summer Varner of 176 Summer Valley Rd., Buffalo, passed away, Friday, Jan. 13, 2012 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Varner was born in Adamsburg, December 17, 1935, a son of the late Walter Glenn Varner and Eunice Pearl Lancaster Varner. He was retired from Eldeco Co. of Greenville and was manager with his wife of B&J Monuments of Union. Mr. Varner was a graduate of Corner Stone Christian Academy and was an active member of True Gospel Life Church. He was a former member of the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit. Mr. Varner was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, and grandfather.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Barbara Voiselle of Union, and Penny V. Culp and husband Robert of Inman; a son: Tim Varner and wife Kathy of Union; twin sisters: Jane Padgett of Spartanburg and Jean Gregory and husband Howard of Graham, NC; nine grandchildren: Roy “Tommy” Lawson, Jr. and wife Nikki, Mitch Heatherly, Tyler Heatherly, Brittany Varner, Kyle Varner, Tiffany Gossett and husband Jason, Matthew Gregory, Jonathan Culp, and Caitlyn Culp; eight great-grandchildren; special brother and sisters-in-law: Frank Summer, Margie Summer and Gearline Summer all of Buffalo and Beth Summer Strait and husband Robert of Jonesville; beloved nieces and nephews: Daniel Strait, Shannon Smith and her children, Dillon and Peaches who were reared in the home, Linda Watson, Lisa Allen, Scott Gregory and Allan Gregory; seven other special great nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew, Austin Ashby. Mr. Robert Cecil Gault, age 87, husband of Betty King Gault of 1518 Whitmire Hwy, Union, SC passed away Friday, January 13, 2012.

Mr. Gault was born in Union, SC October 17, 1924, a son of the late John Henry Gault, Sr and Viola Mosley Gault. He retired from Milliken & Co-Lockhart Plant and had previously worked with other Milliken facilities. Mr Gault was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church; a member of the Masonic Lodge #75 and a member of the VFW. He was a Veteran of the US Army having served in World War II with the 1276 Engineers. Mr. Gault was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Debra G. Austin and husband Tom of Coats, NC; a son, Eric A. Gault and wife Ann of Simpsonville; a nephew, Donald K. Gault and wife Elizabeth of Winston-Salem, NC; three grandchildren: Heidi Austin, Sherry Singleton and husband Chip, Andrew Austin and fiancee Courtney Finley and two great-grandchildren, Kimbell and Samantha Singleton. Mr. Gault was predeceased by a grandson, Ben Morris.

Mr. James W. “Jimmy” Yarbrough, age 63, husband of Judy Austin Yarbrough of 315 Old English Rd., Union, passed away Monday, January 9, 2012 at Wallace Thomson Hopital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Yarbrough was born in Newberry, SC October 9, 1948, a son of Elizabeth White Yarbrough of Monarch and the late Larkin Van Yarbrough. He was a graduate of Ruthledge College and was a retired truck driver. Mr. Yarbrough was also retired from the Monarch Fire Department after forty-five years of service. He served on the Board of the Monarch Fire Department and also served as Captain of the Union County Rescue Squad. Mr. Yarbrough was a Veteran of the US Navy.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, James “Jason” Yarbrough and his wife Michelle and Jerry “Thomas” Yarbrough and his wife Carolyn; a brother, Johnny Ray Yarbrough and his wife Carolyn all of Union; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Mr. Yarbrough was predecease by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Mildred Austin.

It is with sad hearts that the Fielder Family announces the passing of Betty Julia Lee Fielder. Our sweet “Bubba” passed away surrounded by the ones she loved on January 7, 2012. Betty lived an abundant and most selfless life. She opened her home to all her friends and family. She loved everyone, but loved her grandchildren immensely.

Ms. Fielder was born in Columbia, SC January 10, 1927 a daughter of the late William Dewey Lee and Alice Bessie Lee. She was a graduate of Columbia High School and attended Columbia College. Ms. Fielder was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the “Evening Hardees’ Bunch.” She was predeceased by a daughter, Jill Fielder Huntley; a brother, William Dewey Lee, Jr.; and a nephew, William Dewey “Billy” Lee, III.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Julia Lee Fielder and husband Don Sanders; Jennifer Fielder Horne and husband Tony Horne; her grandchildren, Hunt Huntley and wife Anne, Fielder Huntley, Libby Robertson, and Jake Robertson; her great-grandchildren, Jill and Ali Huntley. Also surviving are a niece, Robin Inman and a nephew, David Lee; great-nieces, Lauren and Lindsey Inman and Hannah Lee; and a great-great-niece Jayci Claire Bates and a great-great-nephew, Hunter Ryan Vassey. She was also loved by Harry and Kathy Huntley, Kathryn Huntley, Jennings Huntley, Courtney Horne, Dr. Gerald and Lora Fielder, a special friend Mr. Vic Mallett and her faithful dog Coby.

Mrs. Susan Nell Mincey Denton, age 65, wife of Colonel (ret.) C. Richard Denton of 4211 Jonesville- Lockhart Hwy., Lockhart Community, Union, SC., passed away Friday, January 6, 2012 at Oakmont of Union.

Mrs. Denton was born in Winnsboro, SC September 13, 1946 a daughter of the late Julian Wade Mincey and Nellie Mae Burkhalter Mincey. She had accompanied her husband around the world during his military career. After retiring to Lockhart, she became a member of Lockhart United Methodist Church and had served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Denton was an accomplished artist, who had received many awards for her art work. She enjoyed genealogical research and family history; Mrs. Denton was the niece of Dr. Joseph Burkhalter, the inventor of Ibuprofen.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Col.(ret.) C. Richard Denton are a daughter Renee Denton of Union; a sister: Judy M. Sprouse and husband Donald of Lockhart; a brother: David Mincey of Georgetown; and one granddaughter: Kelsey Erin Granger.

Mrs. Grace C. “Jackie” Greene, age 84, widow of Thomas P. Greene, Sr. formerly of Poppy Lane, Union, passed away suddenly Wednesday, January 4, 2012.

Mrs. Greene was born in Union County, SC June 25, 1927, a daughter of the late Clarence “Tudor” Chalk and Bessie Mae Baines Chalk. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where she was a former choir member. Mrs. Greene was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three daughters: Jacqueline Oyler and husband Jack of Fox, Arkansas, Pansy Ray and husband James of Rock Hill and Phyllis Morrow and husband Danny of Union; fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Greene was predeceased by a son, Thomas P. Greene, Jr and nine siblings.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. John Cribb.

Jewell Eubanks Arrington, daughter of Talmadge and Della Eubanks, born May 4, 1928, passed away peacefully at Greenville Memorial Hospital in the early morning hours of January 2, 2012. Born and raised in Buffalo, South Carolina, she graduated from Union High School in 1946 and later moved to Aiken, SC, then to Charleston, SC, where she spent most of her life as a beloved wife and devoted mother. Her final residence before passing was at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community in Laurens, SC. She was preceded by her parents, her life-long love and husband, Arthur, her sister, Margaret, and her brother Wayne.

She is survived by a daughter, Eve Burroughs (Mickey), of Greenville, SC, and a son, Colonel (Ret) Steven A. Arrington (Jane), of San Antonio, Texas. She had six grandchildren, Frank Crossley (Laura) of Concord, NC, Lorrie Humphries (Jason) of Columbia, SC, Captain Gabriel Arrington (Christina) of Wichita, KS, Tara Armstrong (Matt), of Dallas, TX, Michael Burroughs (Jessica) of Raleigh-Durham, NC, and Amy Burroughs Ben) of Baltimore MD. She was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service for Jewell at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center Chapel at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, 21 January.

Jewell loved life, loved her family and loved her friends. And really, she never met a stranger. Her boundless energy and ever present, warm smile was infectious and brought sunshine to some of our darkest days. She had a special gift of making anyone feel special, no matter where they came from, no matter what they had or didn’t have, and no matter what path they walked in life. And how will most of our family remember her? We will remember her dancing till the late evening hours at her granddaughter’s wedding, less than two months ago. The light of her love still burns brightly in our hearts.
