John Steven Tipton

Mr. John Steven Tipton, age 34 of 117 Brown Street, Union, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Tipton was born in Union, SC January 30, 1979, a son of Sheena Willard James of Conway and the late Johnny Allen Tipton. He was employed with R-M Timber and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in additon to his mother are his fiancé Crystal Brannon of the home; two daughters: Haleigh Tipton and Taylor Tipton both of Union; a special granddaughter, Kayla Eller; maternal grandmother, Shelvia Willard of Conway; paternal grandmother, Anna Lou Tipton of Union; two sisters: Melissa Smith of Arizona and Leigh James of Conway; two brothers: Kenneth Smith and wife Amanda of Conway and Jacob James of Conway; step-father, Chris James of Conway; an uncle, Jimmy Tipton of Spartanburg and several nephews. Mr. Tipton was predeceased by paternal grandfather, John D. Tipton and maternal grandfather, Griffin Willard.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 31, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery.    Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

The family is at the home of his grandmother, Anna Lou Tipton, 2620 Lockhart Hwy, Union and also at the home of Phyllis Stines, 214 Old Shetley Place, Union.

Bobby Henry Inman
Union, SC


Mr. Bobby Henry “Chunky” Inman, age 54, husband of Debbie Burgess Inman of 424 Peach Orchard Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Inman was born in Union, SC March 26, 1959, a son of the late Floyd Inman and Annie Gregory Inman. He was previously employed with Milliken and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sisters: Joyce C. Rector and Lynn Babb and husband Carl; a brother, Lewis Floyd Inman all of Union; a special niece, Kimberly Bradburn and husband Robbie; a special nephew, Cliff Inman;several other nieces and nephews and two special pets, Tibby and Coco. Mr. Inman was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Eugene Inman.

A Memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 31, 2013 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Gregory and Rev. Dr. Aubrey Calvert.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ronnie Green, Eddie Berry , Terry Green and Terry Bobo.

Visitation will be held in the church after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bobby H. Inman Memorial Fund, P.O. 293, Union, SC 29379.

Elizabeth Callahan Tucker
Buffalo, SC


Mrs. Elizabeth Callahan Tucker, age 79, widow of Curtis Lee Tucker formerly of 213 Gin Circle, Buffalo, went home to be with her Lord while surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Oakmont Nursing Home.

Mrs. Tucker was born in Union, SC January 5, 1934, a daughter of the late William Clyde Callahan and Alma Wright Callahan. She was formerly employed with Inman Mills-Enoree Plant and also United Merchants. Mrs. Tucker was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters: Sharon Tucker Coats and husband Wade of Buffalo and Stephanie Tucker Bentley and husband George of Greenville; a son, Steven C. Tucker and wife Debbie of Union; eight grandchildren: Jason Burbage, Jon-Michael Burbage, Beth Huffman, Kyle Tucker, Justin Maness, Karla Maness, Kenny Bentley and Whitney Garner and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Tucker was predeceased by a brother, Jack Lee Callahan.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, May 27, 2013 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton and Rev. Robert Jarvis.

Mrs. Tucker’s grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 1:30-2:45 PM Monday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church prior to the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, 2153 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Buffalo, SC 29321 or to a charity of one’s choice.

The family will be at the home of her son, Steve Tucker, 151 Pineland Avenue, Fairwood Subdivision, Union SC 29379.

Ernest Franklin “Boone” Morris
Jonesville, SC


Mr. Ernest Franklin “Boone” Morris, age 84, husband of Betty Howell Morris of 755 Howell Rd., Jonesville, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Morris was born in Union County, SC December 26, 1928, a son of the late Ernest Morris and Martha Ivey Morris. He retired from Milliken & Co after forty-two years of service. Mr. Morris was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church where he was a member of the Choir; the teacher of the Men’s Sunday School Class and a former Deacon. He was also a member of the Mt. Joy Masonic Lodge.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Donna M. Manus and husband Mike of Jonesville and Pam M. Brady and husband Lynn of Loganville, GA; four grandsons: Randy Manus, Wesley Manus both of Jonesville, Taylor Brady of Loganville, GA and Spencer Franklin Brady of Chapel Hill, NC; six great-grandchildren: Gabrielle Manus, Triston Manus, Kascie Manus, Maryashlee Manus, Brady Manus and Will Henderson and a sister, Inez Ferguson and husband Jack of York.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, May 27, 2013 at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Alan West and Rev. Glenn Ribelin. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Visitation will be held in the church following the interment.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Joy Baptist Church, 657 Pea Ridge Hwy, Jonesville, SC 29353.

Jimmy Ray “Dog” Gallman
Union, SC


Mr. Jimmy Ray “Dog” Gallman, age 35, of 1515 Kelly Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Gallman was born in Union, SC August 18, 1977, a son of Ray William G. “Jim” Gallman and Barbara Keith Gallman of the home. Mr. Gallman was a graduate of Jonesville High School and attended Spartanburg Technical College. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a son, Michael Gardin of the home; two sisters: Anita Stephens and Rita Northern both of Union; two nephews: Justus Stephens and Blake Northern and a special friend, Jeff Barnes of Gaffney. Mr.Gallman was predeceased by maternal grandparents, William T. and Myrtle Turner Keith and paternal grandparents, Dean M. and Lillie Mae Coleman Gallman.

A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 PM Monday, May 27, 2013 at Holcombe’s Jonesville Chapel conducted by Rev. Wayne Cook.

Visitation will be held in the chapel immediately following the service.

Darryl Thomas Lebeau Medford

Mr. Darryl Thomas Lebeau Medford, age 60, of 3647 Buffalo-West Springs Hwy, Buffalo, passed away suddenly.

Mr. Medford was born in Haywood County, NC May 1, 1953, a son of the late Charles Bryan Medford, Sr. and Ruth Marie Seay. He was a graduate of Union High School and had attended Spartanburg Technical College where he studied Drafting. Mr. Medford was a welder and also worked in lawn care service. He was a Veteran of the US Army and a former member of the South Carolina National Guard- Whitmire Unit. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Angela Gail Bailey and husband Jack Starnes of Monroe, NC; sisters and brothers: Bonita Turner and husband William of Union, Charles Bryan Medford, Jr of Stedman, NC, Mary Ann Murphy and husband Robert of Putman, Wid Boone Medford and wife Marlene of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Joyce Gregory of Buffalo, Billy Wayne Medford and wife Barbara of Union and Judith Elaine Scott and husband Kenny of Union; two grandchildren: James Dean Bailey and Amanda Leigh Queen both of Union and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Scott.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

Shirley Trammell
Union, SC


Miss Shirley Trammell, age 49 of 255 Suber Lane, Union passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 at her home.

Miss Trammell was born in Orangeburg, SC May 3, 1963, a daughter of the late Marvin Trammell and Gladys Shaw Trammell.

Surviving are two sisters: Donna T. Lugo of Buffalo and Marsha T. Patrick of Union; two brothers: Grady Trammell and James Trammell both of Union. Miss Trammell was predeceased by two sisters, Carol Martin and Diane Pratt and a brother, Steve Trammell.

Miss Trammell’s wish was to be cremated and the family will be at their respective homes.

Anna F. Brown

Mrs. Anna Faulhaber Brown, age 83, widow of Vance M. Brown, Sr., of 217 Hummingbird Lane, Union, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at her home.

Mrs. Brown was born in Rochester, NY, August 31, 1929 and was retired from Graflex, Inc.   Mrs. Brown attended Second Presbyterian Church in Union.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Liz Finnegan of NY and her best friends and caregiver, Linda Sorrells of Union.  Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her brothers and sister and step children.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Riverside Cemetery, 35 Birch St., Asheville, NC 28801. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the services.

Memorials may be made to Union Co. Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 951, Union, SC 29379.

Kenneth Walter Price

Mr. Kenneth Walter “Kenny” Price, age 58 of 307 Hicks Street, Union, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Hospice of Laurens County after a long journey with MDS.

Mr. Price was born in Union, SC September 5, 1954, a son of the late Bobby and Martha Reid Price. He was a 1973 graduate of Union High School and had attended USC - Union where he was the pitcher for the 1ST Bantam Baseball Team. He was employed with Cone Mill- Carlisle Finishing and was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mr. Price was an avid gardner who loved to share the fruits of his labor with his family and friends.

Surviving are a sister, Darlene Price Black of Jonesville; three brothers: Robin Price, Chris Price, both of Union and Johnny Price of Columbia; a half-sister, Melissa Price Brown of Port Orange, FL; a half-brother, Ray Price of Atlanta, Ga.; nieces and nephews: Jennifer Black Kerr, Lacey Price Brewington, Cody Price, Macey Price, AJ Kerr, Carrigan Brewington, Hallie Brewington, Austin Duckett and Gracie Duckett. Mr. Price was predeceased by a brother-in-law, David Black.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by Deacon Sam White, Chaplain Dan Compton and Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Price, Don Cody, Ricky Smith, Dennis Howell, Tom Adamo and Jimmy Cheek. Members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class of Tabernacle Baptist Church and the employees of Carlisle Finishing are asked to serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Friday evening at the SR Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dorothy Guy Childress, age 78, of 634 Vernon Foster Road, Jonesville, widow of John Irvin Childress, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Childress was born October 28, 1934 a daughter of the late William and Minnie May Puckett. She was first married to the late Charles McBeth Guy. Mrs. Childress was formerly employed with United Merchants - Union Mill and was a member of West Springs Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Monte Roddy and husband William of Woodruff and Patti Cook of Union; one son, Ricky Guy and wife Nicki of Union; one sister, Margaret Murphy Smith and husband Harold Jesse of Carlisle; one brother, Arthur Earl Puckett and wife Lucy of Union; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Olin Knox of Jonesville. Mrs. Childress was predeceased by one son, Royce Guy, four brothers, and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, May 24, 2013 at West Springs Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Rufus Chaneyworth. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be David Hueble, Dustin Roddy, Justin Mundy, and Richard Gregory.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 PM prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Rickey Dean Motts, age 62, husband of Wanda Woody Motts of 951 N. Hwy 150, Pacolet, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at BonSecours, St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, SC.

Mr. Motts was born in Spartanburg, SC November 8, 1950, a son of Shelton Motts of Pacolet and Olivia Hoppes Hudson of Jonesville.He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and Wofford College. Mr. Motts was a self employed construction worker for thirty-five years and had also worked for Timken for seven years. He was the owner of Pacolet Used Cars and was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Motts was a member of the NRA.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a step-mother, Sylvia Jones Motts; two step-sisters, Karen Longshore and husband Tim all of Pacolet and Michelle Hudson Holley of Oregon; a step-brother, Ronnie Hudson of Houston TX; a step-son, Marc Rollins of Spartanbug and a very special uncle, Dean Motts of Kingston, NC. Mr. Motts was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Paul and Lydia Motts and paternal grandparents, Nevins and Ellen Hoppes.

A Memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, May 25, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Branch.

Visitation will be held in the chapel following the service.

Mr. Thomas R. Lugo, age 85, husband of Donna Trammell Lugo of 3260 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Buffalo, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013.

Mr. Lugo was born in Bridgeport, TX May 9, 1928, a son of the late Braulio Lugo and Elizabeth Lugo.

Surviving in addition to his wife are six daughters: Shanan Lugo Peahuff of Buffalo, Elida L. Monroy of Chicago, IL, Yolanda Lugo of Milwaukee, WI, Rosalinda Lugo of Hammond, IN, Irma L. Salazar and Guadlupe Lugo both of Live Oak, TX; two step-sons: Chris Boulware and Chad Boulware both of Buffalo; two sisters: Ponciana Lugo and Ignacia Lugo both of Chicago, IL; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Lugo was predeceased by two sons: Tom G. Lugo and Adam G. Lugo.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Robert Branch.

Active pallbearers will be Shane Peahuff, Chris Boulware, David Martin, Grady Trammell, William Headley and Gary Sizemore.

Mr. Lugo will be taken to the home, 3260 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Buffalo, Tuesday, where the family will receive friends 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Leonard Thornton

Mr. Leonard Thornton, age 79, widower of Jackie Threatt Thornton, of 1861 Mudbridge Rd., Jonesville, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mr. Thornton was born in Spartanburg, October 19, 1933, a son of the late Eula Thornton. He was a graduate of Roebuck High School and retired from Spartan Mills, Rosemont Plant. Mr. Thornton was manager of Lancaster’s Deer Cooler for the last fifteen years. He was a member of West Springs Baptist Church where he had served on the cemetery committee. Mr. Thornton was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War.

Surviving two daughters: Kathy Berry and husband Steve of Union and Gaye Henry and husband Scott of Fort Hood, TX; two sons Ricky Thornton and wife Emelie of Union and Jeffrey Thornton of Charleston; two sisters, Gayle Teaster and husband Lawrence of Pacolet and Sandra Jennings and husband Billy of Pauline; one brother, Billy Thornton and wife Linda of Pacolet; grandchildren, Willa Hucks Mull and husband Teddy of Buffalo, Lee Thornton and wife Kristen of Inman, Capt. Alan Lancaster and wife Anna of Raiford, NC, Joseph Lancaster and special friend Brittney Powers of Jonesville, Trey Hucks and wife Jessica of Aubeny, OR, Dakota Henry of Atlanta, GA, and Zane Henry of TX; great-grandchildren, Blaire Therrell, Blaine Therrell, Ethan Lancaster, Adi Thornton and Adam Lancaster; and a special friend, Selena Hyatt.

Gertrude V. Duckett

Mrs. Gertrude Vinson Duckett, age 91, of 292 Sonoco Rd., Union, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday May 19, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

Mrs. Duckett was the widow of Herman Ducket.

Born in Union, May 25, 1921, she a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Vinson and Mamie Mitchell Vinson. Mrs. Duckett retired from Milliken Co., Monarch Plant after twenty-eight years and worked at Sonoco Products for four years. She was a member of Brown’s Creek Baptist Church and a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a son, Robin Duckett and wife Rita of Spartanburg; three brothers, Jake Vinson and wife Ollie Mae, Jack Vinson and wife Sarah, and Buck Vinson and wife Bessie all of Union; four grandchildren, Jami Trammell and husband Dennis “Bunt” Trammell of Union, Matthew Duckett and wife Bridgett of Gaffney, Ashley Searcy and husband Josh of Spartanburg and Samantha Green of Spartanburg; three great-grandchildren, Conley Trammell, Jack Duckett and Lauren Searcy; and numerous nieces and nephews including a special niece Susie Berry of Union. Mrs. Duckett was predeceased by a sister, Corine Hart; three brothers, Jeff, Tom and J.E. Vinson; two half sisters, Alma Morris and Mamie Comer and four half brothers, Ernest, Boyd, Bea, and Tyne Vinson.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Brown’s Creek Baptist Church conducted by Rev. John Lee and Rev. Dr. Tim Driggers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Vinson, Rickey Duckett, C.T. Hart, Larry Duckett, Wade Lee Hart, Stanley Vinson, Wayne Vinson and Terry Vinson.

Mrs. Laura Inez Patterson Minton, age 83, wife of David Minton of 251 E. Main St., Pacolet, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Mrs. Minton was born in Union Co., May 10, 1930 a daughter of the late Elmer Noah and Nora Fisher Patterson. She worked along side her husband for many years at Minton’s Garage and Wrecker Service and was a proud graduate of Broom High School in 1982. Mrs. Minton loved to fish and cook; attend her children’s and grandchildren’s ballgames and play bingo. Mrs. Minton was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pacolet.

Surviving in addition to her husband of 66 years are three daughters, Lynn Wunch, Trina Hutchins and husband John and Dale Helms and husband Bryan all of Pacolet; one son, Tim Minton and wife Tammy also of Pacolet; a sister, Theaster Willis of Saluda, SC; seven grandchildren: Rev. Hans Wunch and wife Laurie, Angie Minton Brasington and husband Jody, Mandie Minton, Timothy Neil Minton and wife Ginger, Laura Hutchins, Walt Hutchins and Kirby Helms; three great-grandchildren: Micaiah Wunch, Siles Wunch and Anna Raye Brasington. Mrs. Minton was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, May 20, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Pacolet conducted by Rev. Tommy Sparks. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at First Baptist Church of Pacolet.

Mr. Billy Franklin Blackwood, Jr, age 52, husband of Lynda Diane Sherbert Blackwood of 6383 Hwy 56, Pauline, SC, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013.

Mr. Blackwood was born in Union, SC March 10, 1961, a son of Frankie Earls Ivey of Union and the late Billy Franklin Blackwood, Sr. He was a graduate of Union High School and had attended Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Blackwood was employed with the family business, Ivey Reality and Rentals. He attended Bethesda Baptist Church of Spartanburg.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Abbey Blackwood of Lake Wylie; a sister, Sheri Todd of Fletcher, NC; a brother, Terry Blackwood of Union and a maternal grandfather, Horace Earls of Union.

Mr. Ronald T. Purkey, age 73 of 921 Gaffney Hwy, Jonesville, widower of Gayle Petty Purkey, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Purkey was born in Jonesville, March 15, 1940, a son of Agnes McKinney Purkey of Union and the late Lewis Purkey.  He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Spartanburg Junior College. Mr. Purkey was retired from Spartanburg Steel after 35 years of service and was a member of Jonesville Baptist Church. He also was an avid golfer and fisherman.

Surviving in addition to his mother are a sister-in-law, Ruby Edwards of Spartanburg; a brother-in-law: Boyce Martin of Pacolet; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Wanda Burgess and husband Kevin of Columbus, NC.  Mr. Purkey was predeceased by a son, Todd Purkey.

Graveside services will be held 4:00 PM Friday, May 17, 2013 at Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Jeff Dean.

Mr. Charles “Catfish” Thomas, age 80 of 408 Meansville Rd., Lot 21, Union, SC passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

Mr. Thomas was born in Greenville, SC June 23, 1932, a son of the late Edward Thomas and Ella Gregory Thomas. He was a retired textile worker.

Surviving are a daughter, Jo Anne Millwood; a son, Billy Thomas both of Buffalo; a sister, Dorris Moss; a brother, Eugene Thomas and wife Melinda all of Union; several grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mr. Thomas was predeceased by a sister, Louise Longshore and three brothers: Alton Thomas, Andy Thomas and Edward Thomas, Jr.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz.

Mrs. Eva Delle Epps Stepp, age 87, formerly of Bird Street, Union, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Oakmont of Union. Mrs. Stepp was the widow of James Troy Stepp, Sr.

Mrs. Stepp was born in Union, SC June 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Jesse Epps and Rose Howell Epps. She was a homemaker and a member of Philippi Baptist Church. Mrs. Stepp was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are three daughters: Rita S. Blair and husband Larry of Jonesville, Alice Small and husband Ronnie and Vickie Moss and special friend, Willard “Snowball” Hucks all of Buffalo; a son, Jimmy Stepp of the home; five grandchildren: Rhonda Lindler, Wanda Donnelly, Tracy Turner, Lee Crocker and Brianna Stepp; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stepp was predeceased by a granddaughter, Mary Gault; three sisters: Ruby Malpass, Bessie West and Nellie Chaney and a brother, James Arthur Epps.

Mr. William Charles Floyd, age 67, husband of Elaine Jennings Floyd of 108 Haile Street, Jonesville, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, May 12, 2013.

Mr. Floyd was born in Union, SC September 6, 1945, a son of the late Willie Floyd and Gwinn Martin Floyd. He retired from the Department of Transportation after twenty-five years of service. Mr Floyd was a member of the S.C. National Guard and a member of Jonesville Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kelli Floyd; a son, Chuck Floyd both of the home; two sisters: Becky Garrett and husband Kenneth of Pacolet and Jean Floyd of Jonesville; three brothers: Tommy Floyd and wife Elizabeth of Gaffney, Billy Floyd of Spartanburg and J.C. Floyd of Piedmont. Mr. Floyd was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ann Smith and a brother, Robert Floyd.

Mr. Haney was born in Buffalo, February 27, 1946, a son of the late Thomas Herman Haney and Sallie Jane Bledsoe Haney.  He was a retired construction worker and a member of Welcome Baptist Church. Mr. Haney also was a veteran having served in the US Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Lisa Streeter and husband Brian of North Carolina; a son, Jeffrey Haney of Wilimantice, CT; three sisters, Marguerite Swanson of Aiken, Doris Dover and friends, Harry Burgess of Union and Diane Panther and husband Joe of Laurens; a brother, Dean Haney; a special daughter, Susan Cheatham and husband Eddie of Union and three step-sons.   Mr. Haney was predeceased by a sister, Nell Billings and two brothers: Ken Haney and Ronnie Haney.

Mr. Grady Preston Boulware, age 76 of 208 Gin Circle, Buffalo, SC., passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Wallace Thomson Hospital.

Mr. Boulware was born in Union, SC, June 24, 1936, a son of the late Urban Boulware and Annie Fee Boulware. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Boulware was predeceased by a niece Cathy Boulware that was reared in the home; three sisters: Ruth Boulware, Ann Knox, and Nettie Hall; four brothers: Rion Boulware, Gilbert Boulware, Sam Boulware and Amos Boulware.

Mr. Boulware was employed by the Sunset Drive In, The Duncan Theater, and retired from Buffalo Mill.  He a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and loved to sit a McDonalds. Mr. Boulware lived life to the fullest.

Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM., Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess.

Mr. Richard Nalls, age 66, husband of Vicki Ivey Nalls of 103 Birchwood Drive, Union, SC passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at his home after a battle with cancer.

Richard was born on November 10, 1946, in Springfield, VA, a son of the late Pollie Hall Sinclair and the late Hubert Nalls. He was retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections and was an avid golfer. Mr. Nalls was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, having served with the 4th Infantry Division, 1st Battalion 14th Infantry “Golden Dragons.” He was awarded the Purple Heart, The Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal. Mr. Nalls served his country from March 1966 until December 1967. Richard was of the Methodist faith, however he attended Philippi Baptist Church with his wife Vicki.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three step children: Khristy Wade of Union, Charles Wade of Columbia and Eric Wade and wife Carla of North Carolina; two step grandchildren: Taylor Wade of Union and Jessica Wade of Myrtle Beach; a sister Carol Clark of Virginia and a brother Ron Nalls of Florida. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a sister and brother.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, May 13, 2013, at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Tommy Mann.

Mr. Lee was born in Spartanburg Co., October 31, 1948 a son of the late William C. Lee and Ruby Massey Lee. He was a member of Tate Memorial Baptist Church of Pacolet.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son: James “Jimmy” Lee, Jr., of Pacolet; a granddaughter, Jada Lee of Spartanburg; a nephew whom he thought of as a son, Holden Wayne Ellison of also of Pacolet and three other nephews.

Mr. Proctor was born in Union, December 19, 1980 a son of Twyla Austin Proctor of the home and Allen Wayne Proctor of Jonesville.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are his maternal grandmother, Shirley Austin of Union. Mr. Proctor was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Carroll Austin and his paternal grandparents, Harry and Margie Proctor.

Louise V. Petty Kirby

Mrs. Hester Louise Vaughn Petty Kirby, of 1555 Kelly Rd., Union, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2013.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Cherokee Co., October 10, 1921 a daughter of the late William Paul Vaughn, Sr. and Mamie Jeanette Gault Vaughn Boughman. Mrs. Kirby was first married to Dewey Watson Petty, Sr., who died in 1957 and secondly married to Edward Neal Kirby who died in 1993.

Mrs. Kirby was a member of Foster’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher in the Youth Dept. and later a teacher for the Senior Adult Class for more than fifty years. She also served on the church official Board, church School Superintendent, and chair person of Adult Work, Health and Welfare. A member of the Wesylan Service Guild of the church, she served as District President of the Guild for two years.

Mrs. Kirby was a member of the board for the Family Community Leader of the Clemson Extension Service in Union Co., a member of the Kelton Family Community Leaders and received a fifty year award in 1997. She also was a member of the Union Co. Historical Foundation, Friends of the Union Co. Carnegie Library, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 22, Chairman of the Gold Star Mothers of Union Co., served on the Veteran’s Day Parade committee, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Chapter #660 as a real great-granddaughter of the Confederacy, a member of the Kelton Garden Club and the Arts Council of Union Co.

Her christian faith and caring for others was an important part of her life. She gave many hours of service to the Wallace Thomson Hospital, beginning as a Pink Lady, June 19, 1974, later changing the name to Wallace Thomson Hospital Volunteers. As a volunteer, she served as president, secretary and a member of the Volunteer Scholarship Commitee.

In 1980, the Petty-Kirby family was chosen the Union Co. Family of the Year by Governor Richard Wilson Riley. In 1981, Mrs. Kirby was listed in the First Lady’s Cookbook by Mrs. Richard Wilson Riley.

In her love for writing and her community, she was a correspondent for the Union Daily Times of the Kelton news and later the Kelly-Kelton news for many years. More recently she wrote for the United Daughters of the Confederacy Charter # 660 as a corresponding secretary.

A member of the Union Lioness Club, she was chosen the “Lioness of the Year” for the 1995-96 year. The Lioness Club disbanded in 1996, so she became a member of the Union Lions Club in November 1996.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by a daughter, Peggy P. Mullinax and husband Steve of Spartanburg; a son, Dewey W. Petty, Jr. and wife Jane of Union; a step-son, Thomas Kirby and wife Carla of TN; two daughters-in-law, Doris Petty of Union and Fran Kirby of Inman; three sisters, Virginia Beers and Donna Harris both of Spartanburg and Frances Craig of Moore; three brothers, James Vaughn, Paul “Cook” Vaughn and Harold Vaughn all of Jonesville. 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Kirby was predeceased by a son, William “Bill” Petty and a step-son, Ronald Kirby.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, May 13, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Glenn Ribelin.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Mr. Dimsdale was born in Spartanburg, SC July 30, 1958, a son of Guynell Burrell Dimsdale of Pacolet and the late Raymond Dimsdale. He was employed with Keystone of Gaffney and was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are three daughters: April Littlejohn and husband Michael of Jonesville, Michelle Lawson and husband Eric of Union and Gail Thompson of Pacolet; three sons: David Sizemore of Pacolet, Lester Parson of Gaffney and Larry Parson of Pacolet; fourteen grandchildren: Ashley Sizemore, Corey “CJ” Knox both of the home, Amber Lawson, Kamp Lawson both of Union, Devin Littlejohn of Jonesville, David Sizemore, Hannah Sizemore, Brianna Sizemore all of Spartanburg, Freddie Diaz, Austin Stafford, Secret Stafford all of Pacolet, Crystal Parson, Dustin Parson and Leslie Parson all of Gaffney; a sister, Mary Edwards and husband Phil of Pacolet and a brother, Bobby Dimsdale and wife Jodi of Jonesville. Mr. Dimsdale was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Knighten and a brother, Raymond Dimsdale, Jr.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Jonesville Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Dennis Tessnier.

Active pallbearers will be Cory Knox, Devin Littlejohn, Lester Parson, Larry Parson, James Hill, David Sizemore and Seth Blackwell. Dewey Dimsdale and Bobby Dimsdale, Jr are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Dimsdale will be taken to the home, 657 Gaffney Hwy, Jonesville, Saturday, where the family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM.

Mrs. Annie Lucille Vaughan Harris, age 96, of 913 Brown’s Creek Church Rd., Union, widow of William Douglas Harris, went home to be with her Lord peacefully, Monday April 29, 2013.

Mrs. Harris was born in Union, September 25, 1916, the oldest of six born to the late William Smith Vaughan and Maude Palmer Vaughan Stines. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Tanglewood Baptist Church. Mrs. Harris was active in her church, where she had taught Sunday School for many years and also had served as church clerk. She was a most unselfish person and always enjoyed doing for others.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Pridemore and husband Earl, and Peggy Branch and husband Robert; one son: James “Jert” Harris all of Union; a sister: Mildred Jolly of Union; five grandchildren: Tammy Jones, Robin Belue and husband Jimmy, Rickey Pridemore and wife Tammy, Renae Duncan and husband Jimmy, and Sherry Brown and husband Jerry; eight great-grandchildren: B.J. Brown, Jason Belue, Brandy Brown Waddell and husband Jason, Matthew Jones, Phillip Jones, Casey Duncan, Megan Pridemore and Claire Pridemore; four great-great-grandchildren: Kinsley and Katlyn Waddell, Caley and Emma Brown all of Union; five sisters-in-law: Mrs. Frances Vaughan, Mrs. Ada Adams, Mrs. Marion Harris, Mrs. Suzanne Harris, and Mrs. Dorothy Morris; a brother-in-law: Manuel “Preach” Harris and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harris was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary Virginia Harris, a sister, Opal Stines and three brothers, Arthur, Isaac and Earl Vaughan.

Funeral services were held 2:30 PM Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Tanglewood Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Branch and Rev. Charles Flowers. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Jason Belue, Matthew Jones, Phillip Jones, William Jolly, Ted Adams and Tony Harris.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 2:15 PM to form the honorary escort, employees and nurses of Blue Ridge Hospice, Wayne Harris, Buddy Harris, Wallace Harris, Terry Harris, Charles Adams, Buddy Vaughan, Stanley Vaughan, Howard Wells, Dennis Roark and Randy Howell.

Peggy Jean Carter Lipford
Simpsonville, SC


Mrs. Peggy Jean Carter Lipford, age 79, of Simpsonville, widow of Russell Lee Lipford, Sr., passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Hillcrest Hospital.

Mrs. Lipford was born in Lockhart, SC January 9, 1934, a daughter of the late Camak Carter and Dakota Wilson Carter. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was a retired nurse. She was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Leisa Whitlock and husband David of Simpsonville; a son, Lee Lipford and wife Rebecca of Moore; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lipford was predeceased by a brother, Jimmie Carter.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz.

Visitation will be held at the graveside immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 951, Union, SC 29379.

Mrs. Minnie P. “Dib” Brackins, age 91, wife of Doyle Brackins of 85 Rabon Shores, Waterloo, SC passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Laurens County Hospital.

Mrs. Brackins was born in Union County, SC September 23, 1921, a daughter of the late Elmer Noah Patterson and Nora Fisher Patterson. She was a retired textile worker and homemaker. Mrs. Brackins was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church, Gaffney.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two step-daughters: Gloria Patterson of Barre, VT and Danielle Brackins of Spartanburg; three step-sons: Rev. Joe Brackins, Doyle Brackins and wife Francis and Jason Brackins all of Spartanburg; two sisters: Inez Minton of Pacolet and Theaster Ward Willis of Saluda; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brackins was predeceased by a daughter, Peggy Rachel Ivey.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May 3, 2013 at SR Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. A.J. Brackins and Rev. Harvey Herschel. Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held 1:00-2:00 PM Friday in the chapel prior to the service.

The family is at the home of her step-son, Rev. Joe and Sherry Brackins, 105 Townsend Court, (Glendale Community), Spartanburg.
